S.T.A.R.S. of Phys-ed!

S.T.A.R.S. Anchor Chart

S.T.A.R.S. originated from the TDSB.  Below is an anchor chart of the S.T.A.R.S. outline that can be posted for quick reference or when referring to a learning goal for the day.  For example, students are learning to participate safely in a sending activity.  Refer students to the S1 of the S.T.A.R.S. chart and then decide on success criteria for being safe (student generated of course).

SUCCESS CRITERIA ANCHOR CHART:
  • Make three labels: Active Living, Movement Competence, Living Skills
  • Divide chart paper into 3 sections
  • Laminate (if possible as balls, equipment will quickly tear down your anchor chart).
Dry Erase (laminated) Success Criteria Chart for longer  care.  If you need to refer back to this anchor chart in the future, take a picture and keep it in a TLCP binder (Teaching Learning Critical Pathways for HPE).

When creating success criteria with students, teachers often have no where to hang their posters (or no tape will stick to the wall!!!) or don't have a chalkboard or whiteboard in the gym.

** Purchase Velcro strips from the dollar store.
  • Attach to the back upper corners of laminated chart paper or thicker piece of paper.
  • Next attach the Velcro to the wall.
  • HINT: I always attach the fuzzy part to the wall because the rough part of the Velcro always picks up debris.
  • You can re-use the poster at the end of a learning cycle!

H&PE "Community" of Learners Knit Together!

True Sport Community Quilt

It's that time of year!

Teachers, students, families, communities are preparing for the back-to-school rush! I am starting a blog to share ideas, resources, and get in touch with a community of learners who will provide feedback and even share best practices in Health & Physical Education.  I know that everyday I walk into my classroom, it's a playground waiting to be explored and my students will hopefully have input into their learning and utilize the tools given to them to enrich and guild there physical literacy.

With inspiration from True Sport, I integrated in art idea into our end-of-the-year Middle Schools Games Day.  Along with a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, all grade 6 and 7 students created their own quilt patch and added it to one of four 8x5 panels.

How to make the "True Sport Community Quilt" - A Beginning of the Year Idea to encourage Positive Living Skills in your Classroom.
  1. Brainstorm character / living skills words using True Sports Principles for sport and Principles for Communities
  2. Dollar store run for black sheets of thick foam like board. Pencilled in squares that were 10cm x 10cm (your choice on size).  Score the lines before cutting then cut.
  3. Using Glue Gun/sticks (Walmart 100 sticks for approx. $5), and write words in creative directions, lengths, widths (see if you can read the words above).
  4. Have students use oil pastels
  5. I glued the squares onto a piece of chart paper...your choice how you manage your community quilt!
Enjoy building your community of Physically Literate Learners in Health & Physical Education.  You now have the beginnings of a literacy wall as well for you gym or health room.
