True Sport Community Quilt |
It's that time of year!
Teachers, students, families, communities are preparing for the back-to-school rush! I am starting a blog to share ideas, resources, and get in touch with a community of learners who will provide feedback and even share best practices in Health & Physical Education. I know that everyday I walk into my classroom, it's a playground waiting to be explored and my students will hopefully have input into their learning and utilize the tools given to them to enrich and guild there physical literacy.
With inspiration from True Sport, I integrated in art idea into our end-of-the-year Middle Schools Games Day. Along with a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, all grade 6 and 7 students created their own quilt patch and added it to one of four 8x5 panels.
How to make the "True Sport Community Quilt" - A Beginning of the Year Idea to encourage Positive Living Skills in your Classroom.
- Brainstorm character / living skills words using True Sports Principles for sport and Principles for Communities
- Dollar store run for black sheets of thick foam like board. Pencilled in squares that were 10cm x 10cm (your choice on size). Score the lines before cutting then cut.
- Using Glue Gun/sticks (Walmart 100 sticks for approx. $5), and write words in creative directions, lengths, widths (see if you can read the words above).
- Have students use oil pastels
- I glued the squares onto a piece of chart paper...your choice how you manage your community quilt!
Enjoy building your community of Physically Literate Learners in Health & Physical Education. You now have the beginnings of a literacy wall as well for you gym or health room.
